North Idaho College student Melissa Owens was recently selected as the Coeur d'Alene Rotary Club Student of the Month.
Owens is currently an Associated Students of NIC Senator working toward a degree in social work. She is president of the Cardinal Leaders in the Community Club will lead a group of students in building a home for Habitat for Humanity during the club's alternative spring break trip this spring. She said she also plans to run for ASNIC president in 2009-2010.
Owens is on the Dean's List for fall semester 2008 and is an AmeriCorps alumna.
Over the summer break last year, Owens completed the new Women's Leadership Conference and was asked to return as an alumni speaker for this year's summer institute.
She is on the board of directors for Trinity Group Homes, a nonprofit organization that provides housing for people with mental illnesses, and she is a youth leader for Life Hurts God Heals at her church.
Owens is also a single mother of two children, ages 7 and 3.
