Two Boundary County teenagers have been awarded the Katherine Haynes Art Scholarship. Amanda Stolley and Courtney Branson each received $250 from the scholarship fund that honors the memory of well-known local watercolorist Katherine Haynes. A native of Alberta, Canada, Katherine Haynes lived near Bonners Ferry for over 30 years. She found inspiration in nature and painted many landscapes showcasing the beauty of North Idaho. She was a prolific painter and taught many watercolor classes from her gallery in her home. She was an inspiration and a mentor to many artists in this area.
Katherine's husband, Mike Haynes, said he decided to remember his late wife by establishing a scholarship in her name. The scholarship is funded by donations from family, friends and former students of Katherine's.
The judging panel for the scholarship consists of Mike Haynes, Wendy McClintock and Judy Pederson. "Art has always been something that meant a lot to me," said Amanda. "My uncle is an artist and has given me some tips."
Amanda's art teacher, Mr. Knaggs heard of the scholarship and told Amanda about it. For her entry, Amanda submitted a sketch of her nephew.
"I thought it would be cool to use my art skills in the classroom to help people understand better," commented Amanda, who plans to attend NIC?majoring in biology with a minor in education.
"Thank you so much," emphasized Amanda. "You don't know what it means and what a relief it is to receive this scholarship. Thank you to the teachers at school who helped me get this scholarship."
Courtney was unavailable at the time of this interview.
The Katherine Haynes Art Scholarship is funded by donation. To donate, contact Mike Haynes at 267-2007 or Wendy McClintock at 267-2570.
